Zil Hajj moon sighted; Eid ul Adha on May 27

KARACHI: The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has officially announced that the Zil Hajj moon has been sighted in Pakistan, and Eid ul Adha will be celebrated across the country on May 27.

The announcement was made on Sunday by Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad after a meeting held at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in Karachi. The meeting was attended by religious scholars, meteorological experts, and committee members, while zonal committee meetings were simultaneously conducted in provincial headquarters to collect moon sighting reports from across the country.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad stated that credible testimonies regarding the sighting of the moon were received from several regions of Pakistan. Following consensus among committee members, it was decided that the first day of Zil Hajj 1447 AH will be observed on Monday, May 18, while Eid ul Adha will fall on Wednesday, May 27.

Earlier, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) had also predicted the possibility of the moon being sighted on May 17. According to a spokesperson for the national space agency, the new moon was born at 1:01am on May 17, and by sunset its age had reached approximately 18 hours and 30 minutes — a duration generally considered favorable for visibility.

Meanwhile, several other Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, and Turkiye also confirmed the sighting of the Zil Hajj moon and announced that Eid ul Adha will likewise be celebrated on May 27.

Eid ul Adha, observed on the 10th of Zil Hajj, coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage and is regarded as one of the most significant Islamic occasions. Also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” the festival commemorates the unwavering faith and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH), who was willing to sacrifice his son on the command of Allah before a ram was divinely provided in his place.

The religious occasion is marked with special Eid prayers, family gatherings, charitable activities, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock. The meat from the sacrifice is traditionally distributed among family members, relatives, friends, and people in need, reflecting the spirit of compassion, sacrifice, and community welfare.
